Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of spiral galaxies located in the constellation of Aquarius at a declination of -11 degrees.  The larger, bright yellow galaxy at left, NGC 6985, is 200 million light years away.  It spans 1.2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.  The blue adjacent spiral, LEDA 969910, has no distance available.

At first glance I thought that these galaxies are interacting, but after further study, I am not so sure of that.  The yellow galaxy does not appear distorted.  The blue galaxy is definitely distorted and in front of the yellow galaxy.  The blue galaxy may be a closer irregular galaxy, superimposed on the further yellow galaxy.
